What We’re Proposing

Marks and Spencer is proposing to refurbish the existing What! unit at Gallagher Retail Park to create a new M&S Foodhall.

Planning permission is being sought to enable M&S to use the building for food sales. A separate planning application will be submitted in due course for minor improvement works to the building.

The proposals will create circa 70 jobs, whilst improving customer choice and strengthening Caerphilly’s retail offer.

Key Features:

  • Modern standalone M&S Foodhall providing approximately 18,000 sq ft of retail floorspace.

  • Creation of circa 70 jobs.

  • Refurbishment of an existing retail unit.

  • Significant investment in Gallagher Retail Park.

  • Convenient and accessible shopping destination.

  • Sustainable reuse of an existing retail building.

Sustainability First

The proposals make best use of an existing retail building, reducing the need for significant new development.

By refurbishing an established retail unit, the scheme represents a sustainable investment that supports the efficient use of previously developed land whilst improving choice in an established shopping destination.

Easy to Access, Easy to Shop

Gallagher Retail Park is an established retail destination with excellent accessibility.

The proposals will continue to provide customers with convenient access by car, alongside existing pedestrian connections and public transport serving the retail park.

Community Benefits

The proposals represent a significant investment in Caerphilly, creating new employment opportunities whilst strengthening the borough's retail offer.

The reuse of an existing retail unit will provide local residents with greater shopping choice and help retain spending within Caerphilly by attracting customers who might otherwise travel elsewhere.
